Warped Words Stroop

Text Variant

What is this?

Classic Stroop with visually distorted text. Words are skewed, rotated, or stretched, making them harder to read. This variant tests a key prediction of the automaticity account — if reading is truly automatic, making words harder to read should reduce the interference they cause.

What does it measure?

How text readability affects the strength of Stroop interference. Harder-to-read text may reduce interference because the automatic reading process is partially disrupted. This helps researchers understand the boundary conditions of automatic processing and what factors can modulate cognitive interference.

How it works

  1. 1Same as classic Stroop — name the INK COLOR of each word.
  2. 2The words are visually warped with various distortions (skewing, rotation, stretching).
  3. 3Ignore both the word meaning and the visual distortions — focus only on the color.
  4. 4Respond as quickly and accurately as possible for each trial.

Fun fact

Research shows that when words are harder to read, the Stroop interference actually decreases because the automatic reading process is disrupted. This finding supports the idea that interference depends on how easily the distracting information is processed — degrade the input, and you weaken the conflict.
